MUSCAT: The Oman Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s Election Committee has reviewed preparations for the chamber’s forthcoming elections, including plans to introduce electronic and remote voting.
The committee held its inaugural meeting under the chairmanship of Eng Ghalib bin Said al Maamari, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion for Commerce and Industry.
It reviewed the principal regulatory and technical requirements for the elections, its work plan for the coming period and the measures needed to manage the various stages of the process.
Discussions also covered the committee’s responsibilities and coordination among the government and other entities involved in organising the elections.
The committee examined the proposed election timetable and related procedures. Dates and further details will be announced in line with the approved process, allowing members of the business community to prepare for and participate in the elections.
Particular attention was given to the use of electronic systems to simplify voting, improve efficiency and accelerate the completion of procedures.
The move follows amendments to the regulations governing OCCI election committees. The changes authorise the committee to approve electronic voting devices and other digital tools, as well as a remote voting system.
Al Maamari said the committee was working to complete the regulatory, technical and technological requirements for the elections in accordance with the governing legislation and in coordination with the relevant entities.
The objective is to provide a clear and organised electoral environment in which eligible voters can exercise their rights easily, he said.
The next phase will focus on ensuring that the electoral system and its components are fully prepared, with an emphasis on clear procedures, operational efficiency and the effective use of digital technology.
Al Maamari said greater coordination among the relevant entities would help ensure that all stages of the election were implemented efficiently and strengthen the business community’s confidence in the process.
Modern technology would be central to simplifying the elections and making voting services more accessible and flexible, he added.
The committee is responsible for exercising the powers set out in the regulations governing OCCI election committees. It will oversee the electoral process and monitor its implementation under the approved legal and regulatory frameworks.
The preparations are intended to increase participation by companies and members of the business community in selecting their representatives at OCCI.
