It is bright purple, photogenic and increasingly difficult to miss on café menus across Oman. Açaí has become a popular choice for consumers looking for something refreshing, colourful and seemingly healthy, appearing in everything from smoothie bowls to drinks.

The growing popularity of the Amazonian berry has also created an unusual phenomenon: açaí has become a relatively expensive café indulgence, with some servings costing almost RO 6 or more.

In some outlets, the demand has been high enough for customers to place orders in advance, while others offer only a limited number of servings each day. For consumers, the combination of popularity, limited availability and price has turned what might appear to be a simple fruit bowl into something of a premium treat.

For Mohammed al Shibli, açaí has become part of his regular routine.

“I love to start my day with açaí bowls with fruits”, he said. “Now that most cafés sell them in smoothie forms, it has become even easier to incorporate them into my day”.

Beyond its appealing taste, Al Shibli said he enjoys açaí for the nutrients it adds to his diet. At the same time, he believes the prices charged by some cafés have become excessive.

Açaí is a small purple berry that grows on açaí palms in the Amazon region. It is commonly prepared as a purée or incorporated into smoothies and bowls, often alongside fresh fruit, granola and other toppings.

According to health information provided by the Ministry of Information, açaí contains antioxidants, including anthocyanins, which help protect cells from oxidative stress. It also provides dietary fibre and naturally occurring plant-based healthy fats and can contribute to heart health when consumed as part of a balanced diet. Its fibre content can support digestive health and contribute to feelings of fullness.

Dr Saleh bin Saif al Hinai, a family physician and health content creator, said the appeal of açaí begins even before its nutritional qualities are considered.

“Some dishes are so beautiful in appearance that you are drawn to them before knowing their nutritional value”, he said, pointing to the popularity of açaí bowls.

Açaí is often blended into a thick purée before being served with a variety of toppings.

He described the bowls as being made from mashed açaí topped with fruits, highlighting their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and fibre content, as well as their sources of healthy fats and potential benefits for the brain and heart.

However, the health value of an açaí bowl depends largely on what goes into it. The Ministry recommends using unsweetened açaí purée or powder, moderate amounts of fresh fruit and low-sugar granola. Natural yoghurt, nuts and chia seeds can further add protein and healthy fats.

This is particularly relevant when comparing homemade preparations with commercial versions. Some ready-made açaí bowls can contain significant amounts of sugar because of sweetened toppings and additions. Generous quantities of granola or sweeteners can also make them considerably higher in calories.

While açaí can be a healthier alternative to conventional desserts when prepared with natural ingredients, the Ministry notes that there is not enough evidence to classify it as a “superfood” or as a treatment for disease.

As açaí continues to appear on more menus across Oman, its popularity reflects the growing interest in foods that combine visual appeal with perceived health benefits. Yet the berry’s journey from the Amazon to Omani cafés has also highlighted how preparation, toppings and pricing can shape the way a food is experienced.

For some, it is a convenient and nutritious addition to their daily routine. For others, the price attached to a single bowl or smoothie may be difficult to justify. Somewhere between the health claims, colourful presentation and premium price tag, açaí has become more than just another fruit on the menu; it has become a food trend that continues to attract curiosity and conversation.
