JEDDAH: Oman head coach Tarik Sektioui has stressed that the Red Warriors will go into Saturday’s Gulf Cup 27 clash against Saudi Arabia with a clear attacking mindset, as they look to secure their first victory in Group A.
Oman drew 1-1 with Iraq in their opening match on Wednesday, while Saudi Arabia began their campaign with a win.
Sektioui said his side will respect the hosts at the pre-match press conference on Friday. “We will respect Saudi Arabia as we respected Iraq, but we will play with strength and with the personality of the Omani national team."
The Moroccan coach acknowledged that fatigue had affected some players following the demanding opening game, particularly because of the match timing and high humidity, but confirmed that there were no injury concerns ahead of the Saudi Arabia encounter.
“After the Iraq match, we were a little concerned because some players were tired, but thankfully nothing is worrying, and all the players are ready for tomorrow’s match,” he said.
“We have to manage the three matches intelligently. Saudi Arabia won their first game, but they could lose the next two and fail to qualify. The same applies to all the teams.”
“We have no other option or different calculations. Our objective is to win. Against Iraq, we wanted to show that Oman wants to attack and win, rather than sit back and settle for a draw. We will do the same against Saudi Arabia,” he added.
TEAM SPIRIT
The Oman coach also highlighted the importance of team spirit. “Football is a team sport. When you have a group with spirit, good character, patriotism, solidarity and mutual respect, it makes the coach’s job easier and strengthens the team,” he said.
“All players are important. A talented player can help you win matches, but championships are won by the group.”
On Saudi Arabia’s opening victory, Sektioui said: "The result could give the hosts additional confidence and allow their coach to consider rotating some players, but stressed that Oman would remain focused on its own approach."
Meanwhile, Oman midfielder Abdulmajid al Balushi said representing the national team at the Gulf Cup was a special experience for the younger players.
“Representing Oman is a feeling that cannot be described for us as young players. We have settled into the tournament atmosphere, and the coach has given us confidence. We want to make the Omani fans happy in the match.”
Oman will face Saudi Arabia on Saturday at King Abdullah Sports City, with kick-off scheduled for 10 pm (Oman time).
