SALALAH: Dhofar Governorate is implementing a series of construction, expansion and maintenance projects worth more than RO 19.2 million to enhance school infrastructure and improve the educational environment.

Dr Maysoon bint Bakhit al Shahri, Director-General of Education in Dhofar, said the Directorate General is overseeing a range of projects across the governorate to expand school capacity and meet the current and future needs of students and educational staff.

She said the total value of the projects stands at around RO 19.224 million, covering the construction of new schools, additions, restoration, maintenance and other improvements.

Integrated school buildings account for the largest share, at around RO 13.161 million. The projects include modern schools with increased capacity in several wilayats, particularly in areas experiencing growing demand for educational services. Some projects are under implementation, while others are at the stages of issuing operating orders or completing budget procedures.

The directorate is also following up on 16 school expansion projects worth more than RO 3.229 million. These include new classrooms, teachers’ halls, laboratories, service facilities and playgrounds, along with associated modification and maintenance works. Some projects have been completed and handed over, while work continues on others according to their implementation schedules.

Al Shahri said government schools in Dhofar have 6,715 teachers during the 2026-27 academic year, including 2,320 male and 4,395 female teachers. The number of students stands at 70,686, comprising 34,904 boys and 35,782 girls, distributed across 243 schools and 74 other educational institutions.

She said procedures for appointments, transfers, distribution of new teachers and filling vacancies had been completed according to actual requirements. An orientation programme for new teachers also covered more than 1,200 teachers.

The directorate has also completed preparations for 21 schools scheduled for external review by the Oman Authority for Quality Assurance of Education through integrated support and follow-up plans.

Meanwhile, the travel and tourism specialisation under the vocational and technical education track is being expanded in Dhofar this academic year, with 100 new students enrolled across Al Saidiya School for Boys in Salalah and Khawla bint Hakim School for Girls.

The programme now covers Grades 11 and 12, following its initial launch with Grade 11 students, marking a further expansion of the specialisation in the governorate. — ONA
