Josh Gilbert, etoro Lead Analyst for APAC and the Middle East, said, This is the most important launch in years, and not just because of the phone. It's the biggest product launch in a long time and it's happening under a brand new CEO, so markets are judging Ternus here as much as they're judging the products. That's a big test for any new CEO and the stock has rallied 21% going into it, so there isn't much room for disappointment."
He added, "The foldable has been a decade in the making. Most September's Apple gives us a slightly better version of last year's iPhone. This time it's changing what an iPhone actually is, and that's a different kind of test. Cook wasn't that involved day to day with the product side, but he pushed hard for the foldable. It's expected to come in around $2,000, a long way above the standard iPhone starting at D$800, and that's the number that tells us whether Apple can still make people pay up for a genuinely new iPhone. That’s key because the iPhone still does just over half of Apple's revenue."
Ternus has to persuade consumers beyond the most devoted Apple customers to pay up for a device that introduces some big changes. You have to open the phone to take full advantage of it, it’s set to have less battery life and the camera, a big win for Apple in recent years, is likely to be weaker, said Gilbert
On devices, Apple still measures itself against Samsung and the Chinese handset makers, and it wins that fight comfortably. On AI, It gets judged against Google, Microsoft, Amazon and OpenAI, and there it's behind, having delayed the Siri upgrade. But Apple has never needed to be first, arriving late to the smartphone, the tablet, the smartwatch and the wireless earbud, and winning each category anyway by making the version people preferred using. Distribution to 2.5 billion devices is a weapon nobody else in the AI race is holding.
"The risk is that incumbency counts for less this time around. Assistants live in the cloud and improve with usage and data rather than with industrial design, and Apple has continuously lost senior people to OpenAI and other AI players over the past 18 months. Usage of third-party apps will be key. Think of Siri AI like an agent in your hand, where you tell it to send someone a message on WhatsApp, but that means Apple has to have Meta allow that to happen, and these big companies are building their own assistants. Siri has spent a decade building a reputation for not doing what you ask it to, so it needs to become genuinely useful in the way chatbots already are in our everyday lives. Apple has been written off for being late plenty of times before, though, and it has usually been the wrong call. If Cook's decade was about services, Ternus's looks like it'll be about devices, and the plan is to get more Apple products into more rooms."
Rumored changes include a smaller Dynamic Island, an A20 Pro chip, 5G satellite connectivity, bigger batteries, and new colors.
It will be like having an iPhone mini that unfolds into an iPad mini. The features may include an outer display around 5.5 inches, an inner display around 7.8 inches, an A20 Pro chip, 12GB of RAM, two 48MP rear cameras, and Touch ID in the side button. The device could be called “iPhone Ultra” or "iPhone Duo" with a starting price of $2,000 or more," Apple Hub said.
