The Royal Oman Police (ROP) is marking the International Day of Police Cooperation on September 7, highlighting the importance of international partnerships in combating crime and addressing emerging security challenges.
The annual observance, organised by the United Nations and INTERPOL, is being held this year under the theme 'Protecting against Vulnerability — Building Trust and Legitimacy in Policing', underscoring the need to strengthen international efforts to prevent and combat crime.
Brigadier Jamal bin Habib al Quraishi, Director-General of the Directorate-General of Inquiries and Criminal Investigations and Director of the National Central Bureau — Muscat, said the occasion highlights the importance of cooperation in combating crime through partnerships, information sharing and the exchange of expertise among police and security agencies worldwide.
He said the ROP has established itself as an active partner in international police cooperation through its continued efforts to develop policing mechanisms and practices and strengthen communication, coordination and data-sharing networks.
Al Quraishi noted that INTERPOL has recognised the ROP’s efforts on several occasions, including its role in intercepting illicit funds linked to fraud schemes and dismantling organised crime networks involved in human trafficking, drug trafficking and other illegal activities.
Recent cases demonstrating the effectiveness of international cooperation included the interception of an attempted transfer of $6.6 million linked to fraud schemes and the dismantling of a cross-border trafficking network that attempted to smuggle narcotics valued at approximately RO 500,000.
He said the ROP’s strong relations with police and law enforcement agencies in other countries have also contributed to tracking and apprehending fugitives wanted by Omani judicial authorities.
Al Quraishi expressed appreciation to brotherly and friendly countries for their continued cooperation and support in strengthening international police efforts.
The ROP continues to expand its cooperation with INTERPOL and other relevant international organisations and agencies, with the aim of maintaining an effective security framework capable of responding to evolving criminal threats and future challenges, while combating illicit activities at both national and international levels.
