As a new academic year begins across Oman, colleges and universities are once again prepare to welcome thousands of young people with fresh dreams, new ambitions and the hope of building a successful future.
For many students, therefore, this is not simply the beginning of another academic year, it is the beginning of a journey towards independence, professional life and personal growth.
However, the world they are entering is changing faster than ever.
A degree remains important, but a degree alone can no longer guarantee success. Similarly, good marks are valuable, but practical skills, communication, creativity, adaptability and problem-solving abilities are becoming equally important. Most importantly, hard work has not lost its value. Rather, it has acquired a new meaning. Today, hard work must increasingly be combined with smart work. Students should, therefore, learn to use technology and artificial intelligence as tools to enhance their abilities, rather than allowing technology to replace their thinking.
In the future workplace, the ability to ask the right questions, analyse information, make decisions and develop solutions will be crucial.
Moreover, college life should be viewed as much more than attending lectures and passing examinations. It is, above all, an opportunity to discover one’s strengths, develop confidence, build relationships and understand the responsibilities of professional life.
For example, internships, volunteering, projects, competitions, clubs and learning new skills can provide experiences that textbooks alone cannot offer.
At the same time, young people should understand the dignity of work. Every honest profession has value and contributes to society. Whether one becomes an engineer, doctor, teacher, accountant, technician, entrepreneur, programmer or skilled professional, success begins with commitment and responsibility.
Furthermore, the first job may not always be the dream job. Nevertheless, it can become an important classroom where young people learn discipline, teamwork, communication, punctuality and professionalism.
Equally important, the new generation must prepare not only for today’s jobs but also for tomorrow’s opportunities. Artificial intelligence, automation, robotics, digital businesses and emerging technologies are already transforming traditional careers.
Consequently, students must develop the habit of continuous learning. Graduation should not be seen as the end of education, instead, it should mark the beginning of lifelong learning.
Nevertheless, technology should never replace human values. Integrity, empathy, respect, kindness and the ability to work with others will remain essential, regardless of technological advancement.
Ultimately, a successful career without good character cannot create a truly successful life. For students in Oman, the changing economic environment presents both challenges and opportunities. Therefore, young people should look beyond simply obtaining a certificate. They should ask themselves, what skills do I want to develop? What problems can I solve? What value can I create? What kind of person and professional do I want to become?
Above all, students should remember that the future is not built in a single day. It is built through consistent effort, responsible choices, continuous learning and the courage to adapt.
A degree may open the door, however, hard work, skills, character and vision will ultimately determine how far we go beyond it.
