SALALAH: The International United Nations Symposium on Water Resources Sustainability, themed 'Water and Climate Change,' will begin today in Salalah, bringing together specialists and experts from Oman and abroad for discussions on sustainable water management and the impact of climate change.

The two-day symposium is organised by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources in partnership with Dhofar Municipality and Nama Dhofar Services, and in cooperation with the Omani National Commission for Education, Culture and Science, Unesco and the Omani Water Society.

The symposium will review Oman’s experience in managing and sustaining water resources, with discussions focusing on efforts to address the effects of climate change on surface and groundwater resources.

Key topics will include managing the risks of floods, drought and salinity, diversifying water sources through seawater desalination and treated-water reuse, improving water-use efficiency in agriculture, protecting groundwater reserves, and preserving, maintaining and rehabilitating the aflaj traditional irrigation systems.

The event will also explore the role of modern technologies and innovation in water-resource management, including artificial intelligence, remote sensing, geographic information systems and hydrological modelling. — ONA
