An attempt to explore the traditional connection between Iranian carpet weaving and Oman was showcased at an Iranian carpet weaving session organised by the National Museum in association with Al Besat Carpets.

Titled “A Timeless Craft Takes Shape: Discover the Art of Handwoven Carpet Making,” the session was conducted by Amir Hossein Dehshid, a Persian carpet specialist and conservator, and attracted participants from different walks of life.

Iranian, or Persian, carpets have shared a deep historical and commercial connection with Oman, shaped by centuries of maritime trade, the proximity of the two countries across the Gulf of Oman, and their shared Islamic artistic heritage.

Dehshid said that while Oman had its own indigenous weaving traditions, fine Iranian rugs had long been prized in Omani homes, palaces and majlis spaces as symbols of status, elegance and exquisite craftsmanship.

“For centuries, dhows and merchant fleets crossed the Gulf of Oman, linking Omani ports such as Muscat and Muttrah with Iranian coastal trading hubs. Textiles, spices and hand-knotted Persian carpets were among the goods brought by traders, establishing a lasting appreciation for Iranian craftsmanship in Omani architecture and interior design,” he said.

He noted that fine Persian and Baluchi-style Iranian carpets had traditionally been favoured for formal reception rooms, or majlis, across Oman for their warmth, durability and intricate geometric and floral motifs.

“There are symmetrical and asymmetrical knots that make Iranian carpets stand out,” he said, highlighting the distinctive techniques behind the craftsmanship.

Specialty showrooms, including local merchants in Muttrah Souq and dedicated suppliers across Oman, have continued to offer both authentic hand-knotted and high-grade machine-woven Iranian rugs suited to modern and traditional Omani interiors.

The workshop concluded on August 17 at the National Museum, offering participants an opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the craftsmanship, techniques and historical significance behind Iranian handwoven carpets.
