Hong Kong film legend Patrick Tse Yin died at the age of 89, his children announced on Monday.
His daughter, actor Jennifer Tse, said on Instagram that he died peacefully in hospital with his family beside him following a period of declining health.
An actor, director and producer, Tse became a household name during a career spanning seven decades. Born Tse Ka-yuk in Guangdong, he moved to Hong Kong as a child. He also directed and produced films through his own Tse Brothers company.
Rejected by an acting course in 1953, Tse caught filmmaker Poon Bing-kuen’s attention and made his screen debut as the lead in Save Your Water Supply in 1954.
Known as “Fourth Brother”, Tse became a recognisable Cantonese leading man. The Hong Kong Film Archive described his screen image as suave and carefree, qualities that remained associated with him throughout his career.
He later appeared in the 2001 comedy Shaolin Soccer and received a lifetime achievement honour from the Hong Kong Film Awards in 2019.
In 2022, Tse won Best Actor at the Hong Kong Film Awards for his performance in 'Time', becoming the oldest recipient of the award. It was a late-career high.
His son, Cantopop star Nicholas Tse, said his father devoted his life to entertainment and hoped to bring audiences joy.
Nicholas recalled his father’s belief that “the show must go on”, asking fans not to cry or be too sad when remembering him.
