Oman’s electricity production rises by 6.8%

 Muscat: The Sultanate of Oman’s total electricity production recorded a 6.8 per cent increase by the end of May 2026, reaching 20,314.0 GWh compared to 19,027.4 GWh during the corresponding period in 2025.

Latest preliminary data released by the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI) revealed that net electricity production, which includes purchases by the Oman Power and Water Procurement Company (OPWP) and the Rural Areas Electricity Company (Tanweer); likewise surged by 6.8 per cent to reach 19,717.5 GWh, up from 18,457.6 GWh in the same period last year. In contrast, the country’s total water production witnessed a 3.4 per cent decline, dropping to 201,255.4 thousand cubic metres by the end of May 2026. Among the governorates, Muscat recorded a 6.8 per cent decrease, with water production falling from 83,653.9 thousand cubic metres by the end of May 2025 to 78,000.6 thousand cubic metres in the same period of 2026.

Conversely, production in Dhofar Governorate bucked the downward trend, posting a 2.9 per cent increase to reach 32,086.4 thousand cubic metres, compared to 31,183.9 thousand cubic metres recorded in the corresponding period of 2025. Meanwhile, water production across the remaining governorates collectively registered a 2.5 per cent decline, reaching 91,168.5 thousand cubic metres compared to 93,459.4 thousand cubic metres in the previous year.
