Oman soars to 49th spot in Environmental Performance Index

WASHINGTON: The Sultanate of Oman has achieved a new milestone in the 2026 Environmental Performance Index (EPI), rising to 49th place globally among 180 countries.


Oman advanced 6 places up the scale, compared to its 2024 ranking (55th globally).


The accomplishment affirms the effectiveness of national efforts to promote environmental sustainability and improve environmental performance indicators.


Oman has also won third place at the level of Middle East countries, second place in the Arab world at large and second place among GCC states. This reflects the country’s growing performance in the field of environmental protection and sustainable management of natural resources.


This progress is the outcome of Oman’s national policies in climate action, including the conservation of biodiversity, the improvement of air quality, the expansion of renewable energy projects, the promotion of circular economy and the implementation of environmental sustainability initiatives in line with the goals of Oman Vision 2040.


The Environmental Performance Index (EPI), co-authored by Yale University and Columbia University in the United States. It ranks 80 countries in the world by measuring their performance through a wide range of indicators that assess environmental and sustainability, including climate change, environmental health and the vitality of ecosystems.
