Muscat: As part of its ongoing efforts to promote workplace safety and ensure secure working environments across the Governorate, Muscat Municipality issued a comprehensive set of guidelines governing the storage of materials and equipment at work sites.
According to the municipality, strict compliance with health and safety standards at operational sites is essential to protecting lives, which will help reduce workplace hazards, and prevent avoidable accidents.
Launched under the slogan “Your safety begins with organised storage,” the guidelines highlight a range of preventive measures aimed at improving storage practices in commercial and industrial establishments.
The requirements include allocating designated and organised storage areas for all materials and equipment to prevent overcrowding and disorder, while ensuring that stored items are placed securely and safely to avoid risks caused by falling objects, collapses, or unstable arrangements.
The municipality also emphasised the importance of keeping pathways, corridors, and emergency exits clear at all times to facilitate safe movement and emergency evacuation.
Special attention has been given to the handling of hazardous materials, with flammable substances required to be stored separately and kept away from heat sources, open flames, and possible ignition points. Chemicals and liquid materials must also be stored in suitable, tightly sealed containers to prevent leaks and potential hazards.
In addition, work sites are required to conduct regular inspections of stored materials and remove damaged, expired, or unusable items in a safe manner.
Muscat Municipality warned that neglecting basic safety and organisation measures could lead to serious incidents, as unsafe storage practices may allow hazards to escalate quickly.
The municipality called on business owners, supervisors, and site operators to adhere to the approved safety requirements and implement necessary preventive measures. Inspection campaigns will continue across various locations in the Governorate to monitor compliance, with legal action to be taken against establishments found violating the regulations.
