Thirty years after the release of “Wannabe,” the Spice Girls remain one of the most influential pop groups in music history. Released on June 26, 1996, the infectious debut single quickly topped charts in the UK, the US, and dozens of other countries, introducing the world to the group’s message of “Girl Power.”
The five-member British band, formed in 1994, stood out for celebrating individuality. Unlike previous girl groups with coordinated looks, each Spice Girl embraced a distinct persona. Mel B’s animal prints, Victoria Beckham’s sleek dark dresses, Emma Bunton’s pastel outfits, Melanie Chisholm’s sporty style, and Geri Halliwell’s iconic Union Jack dress became defining symbols of 1990s pop culture.
Music journalist Dominic Mohan said the group offered more than catchy songs, noting that their themes of confidence, friendship, and self-expression resonated with a generation of young women. Their debut hit remains hugely popular, accumulating nearly 1.5 billion streams on Spotify.
The anniversary is being marked by an exhibition at London’s Barbican Centre, showcasing memorabilia and iconic costumes, including Mel B’s leopard-print catsuit worn at the 1997 Brit Awards. The song won two awards that year and cemented the group’s place in pop history.
Their influence continues to be felt today, with artists such as Taylor Swift, Dua Lipa, Adele, and Charli XCX citing them as inspirations. Media lecturer Joel Gray argues that, beyond their pop image, the Spice Girls carried a rebellious energy that helped them connect with diverse audiences and become cultural icons.
The milestone has also reignited speculation about a reunion. Although the five members have not performed together since the 2012 London Olympics, Mel B recently revealed that discussions are taking place. While no plans have been confirmed, fans remain hopeful that the group will reunite to celebrate the enduring legacy of “Wannabe.” -AFP
