MUSCAT: The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has warned that temperatures are expected to rise sharply across several parts of the Sultanate of Oman from Monday, June 8, with some areas likely to approach the 50°C mark as hot and dry weather conditions intensify.
According to an advisory issued by the National Multi-Hazard Early Warning Centre, the coming days will see the return of very high temperatures over the coastal areas of the Sea of Oman, where readings are forecast to range between the mid-40s and may touch 50°C in some locations. The warning comes as Oman enters one of the hottest periods of the year, when prolonged exposure to direct sunlight can pose serious health risks, particularly during the afternoon hours.
The authority said the rest of the governorates are also expected to experience hot conditions, with temperatures likely to remain in the mid 40s. However, weather conditions along the coastal areas of Al Wusta and Dhofar governorates are expected to be relatively more moderate compared with the northern and interior regions.
The CAA advisory said forecasts indicate a rise in temperatures over the coastal areas of the Sea of Oman, with temperatures expected to range between the mid-40s and possibly touch 50°C in some areas.
The bulletin attributed the expected rise in temperatures to the influence of an upper-air high-pressure system, which is one of the key atmospheric factors contributing to extreme heat during this period. The effect is being reinforced by dry north-westerly winds, which often lead to hotter and drier conditions across parts of Oman.
The CAA urged residents, citizens and outdoor workers to take precautions during the period of intense heat. It advised the public to avoid direct exposure to sunlight, particularly during the afternoon, when temperatures are usually at their peak. The authority also called on people to drink sufficient quantities of water to avoid dehydration and heat-related illness.
Employers and individuals working outdoors have been advised to monitor weather updates closely and take practical steps to reduce heat exposure. Such measures include scheduling strenuous outdoor activity outside peak heat hours where possible, resting in shaded or cooled areas, and ensuring continuous access to drinking water.
