MUSCAT: Oman U20 concluded their overseas training camp in Cairo with another valuable test against Egypt U20, going down 2-1 in the second international friendly played at the Sports Centre Stadium in 6th of October City.
The friendly formed part of Oman’s preparations for the upcoming international assignments, led by the Arab Cup scheduled for August, followed by the AFC youth qualifying campaign. Although the result went in favour of the hosts, the match offered head coach Hamad al Azzani and his technical staff an important opportunity to assess the squad under competitive conditions.
Al Azzani used the two-match programme in Cairo to test several players, review their technical and physical readiness and monitor their response to the demands of international football. The coaching staff also focused on tactical discipline, match concentration and the players’ ability to adapt to different phases of play.
Oman had also lost the first friendly against Egypt by the same scoreline, 2-1, at the same venue last Thursday. Despite the two defeats, the camp was seen as an important stage in the team’s wider preparation plan. The Red Warriors youth squad gained match experience against a strong opponent, while the technical staff came away with clearer observations on the team’s strengths, areas for improvement and possible squad combinations.
The camp also helped reinforce commitment and discipline among the players, with the administrative and technical staff working to ensure the programme achieved its main objectives. The Oman Football Association (OFA) also provided the necessary logistical support throughout the team’s stay in Egypt.
The coming period is expected to witness close follow-up of the players through a focused preparation programme before the next national team gathering. Al Azzani is aiming to build a more settled and balanced squad capable of competing strongly in the team’s upcoming regional and continental competitions.
Meanwhile, Oman U20 player Ziyad al Farraji underwent a successful jaw surgery following the injury he sustained during the first friendly against Egypt. The medical staff also checked on Mohammed al Sameen, who suffered a serious incident in the same match after a collision that required immediate medical intervention on the pitch.
The Egyptian youth team’s medical staff, led by Dr Hajed al Antably, responded quickly alongside Oman’s medical team. Al Sameen was taken by ambulance to Zayed Specialist Hospital, where he underwent the required medical examinations and scans, which confirmed that his condition was stable.
The medical and administrative staff of Oman U20 confirmed that both players are in good health and are receiving continuous follow-up and care.
