Around 20 coaches representing clubs, academies and karate centres from various governorates took part in the Oman Karate Committee’s Coaches Qualification Course on May 15 and 16 at the sports hall of Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex in Bausher.
The course aimed to enhance the technical and training capabilities of coaches and improve their coaching efficiency, contributing to the continued development of karate in the Sultanate of Oman in accordance with the latest approved technical methods.
Asian Karate Federation (AKF) coach Basil al Balushi from Shotokan Karate Centre said: “This course was an excellent opportunity to refine our foundational skills and align them with global standards. Now our mission is to transfer this high-level knowledge to our young trainees. Thanks to the Oman Karate Committee for organising this kind of a course.”
The course commenced with a specialised programme on karate fundamentals (Kihon), presented by coach Khamis al Siyabi, who focused on the correct execution of basic punches and blocks, in addition to explaining the important technical points of the first three Heian katas: ‘Heian Shodan’, ‘Heian Nidan’, and ‘Heian Sandan’, with the objective of unifying the fundamental technical performance of these katas among participating coaches.
During the second session of the first day, coach Said al Batrani delivered a practical explanation of the basic kumite techniques, including ‘Kizami Zuki’, ‘Gyaku Zuki’, and ‘Mawashi Geri’. He also reviewed the ‘Sen no Sen’ technique and its application during combat, explaining how to utilise counter-attack timing effectively against opponents.
SPECIALISED SESSIONS
On the second day, Oman national karate team coach Captain Ali bin Said al Shabibi conducted a specialised technical session focusing on the ‘Go no Sen’ and ‘Tai no Sen’ techniques, along with practical demonstrations on their application in kumite competitions and their tactical use during matches. He also provided an overview of modern kumite strategies.
In the second session of the same day, coach Ali bin Talib al Raisi delivered practical training on the advanced katas ‘Miekyo’ and ‘Sochin’, with emphasis on the technical and movement aspects specific to each kata.
OKC member Ali al Raisi said: “This was a karate coaches qualification course in kata and kumite. It had two sessions of kata and two sessions of kumite. We spoke about the basics of kata and kumite and later went into details. This course is part of efforts from the Oman Karate Committee to raise the general level of karate in Oman. The OKC is also planning to host seminars and courses for referees and players as well in the near future.”
The course witnessed excellent interaction from the participants, who praised the technical and practical content delivered by the lecturers, emphasising the importance of such courses in developing coaches and refining their technical skills, which will positively reflect on the future level of players and national teams.
