Fida, Esraa clinch gold as Oman raise tally to seven in Doha

Athletes Fida bint Fouad al Barwani and Esraa bint Saif al Siyabi delivered Oman’s first two gold medals during the second day of competition at the fourth GCC Games, currently taking place in the Qatari capital Doha and running until May 22.


Fida al Barwani claimed Oman’s first gold medal after winning the women’s taekwondo 49 kg event, producing an impressive performance that earned her a place at the top of the podium. The second gold medal came through Esraa bint Saif al Siyabi, who excelled in the women’s épée fencing competition, adding another major achievement to Omani sport.


In fencing competitions, Mohammed bin Rashid al Hajri secured a bronze medal in the 80 kg category, while Shabib bin Salim al Sinani claimed bronze in the 68 kg category. Ali al Busaidy also added another bronze medal in the foil fencing event.


With these results, Oman increased their medal tally at the Games to seven medals, including two gold medals and five bronze medals.


Oman’s national taekwondo team had opened the country’s medal count on the first day through Nibras bin Mohammed al Touqi, who won a bronze medal in the men’s 58 kg category, alongside Omaima bint Harib al Hinai, who secured bronze in the women’s 49 kg category, confirming the strong presence of Oman’s national teams and their continued pursuit of further achievements at the Games.


OVERWHELMING JOY


Athlete Fida bint Fouad al Barwani expressed her immense happiness after winning the gold medal and presenting Oman with their first gold of the Games in the women’s taekwondo 49 kg category.


Al Barwani emphasised that the achievement represents a major motivation for her to continue working toward greater success in future competitions. She noted that the level of competition was very strong among the athletes, but determination and focus helped her achieve her goal and raise Oman’s flag on the podium.


She added that the achievement came as a result of the continuous support and follow up provided by the technical and administrative staff, expressing hope that Oman’s national teams would continue securing more medals and honourable results during the Games.


BEAUTIFUL MOMENT


Meanwhile, Esraa bint Saif al Siyabi described winning the gold medal in the women’s epee fencing event as one of the most beautiful moments of her sporting career, expressing great pride in presenting this achievement to Oman.


Al Siyabi said that the road to gold was not easy due to the high level of competition and closely matched performances among participants. However, she entered the Games with determination and confidence in her abilities to achieve a positive result.


She added that the achievement was made possible through solid preparations and continuous support from both the technical and administrative teams, stressing that the gold medal would motivate her to work even harder in future competitions and achieve further success for Omani sport.


FOURTH DAY CAMPAIGN


Oman’s national teams continue their participation on the fourth day of the GCC Games, with the national athletics team set to compete in several men’s and women’s events on Friday, with expectations of winning additional medals.


The national shooting team will also begin its campaign in the 10m Air Rifle Men’s Qualification event, represented by Hamad bin Said al Khatri, Salim bin Ali al Naabi and Ali bin Sulaiman al Saeedi.


In the women’s category, Oman will compete in the 10m Air Rifle Team event through shooters Amina bint Khamis al Tarshi, Safaa bint Said al Jabri and Al Anoud bint Abdullah al Khalili.


Meanwhile, Oman’s national snooker team begins its participation in the individual competition, represented by Ahmed bin Basheer al Khusaibi and Qasim bin Rashid al Balushi.


The national table tennis team continues its matches in the Games, while the national swimming team concludes its participation through Hamad bin Sulaiman al Hasani in the 1500m freestyle and Mohammed bin Khamis al Wahaibi.
