Masirah crowned women’s handball champions

MUSCAT: Masirah Club were crowned champions of the 2025/2026 Oman Women’s Handball League after a commanding 32–15 victory over Al Amerat in the final, held at the main hall of Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex in Bausher.


The final was played under the auspices of Dr Ahood bint Said al Balushi, Member of the State Council, and attended by Abeer bint Issa al Zadjali, Board Member of the Oman Handball Association and Chairperson of the Women’s Committee, alongside a number of figures interested in women’s sport.


Masirah asserted their dominance from the outset, delivering a powerful performance that reflected their technical superiority, the team stormed to a 17–1 lead by half-time, effectively putting the result beyond doubt. Although Al Amerat showed some improvement in the second half and attempted to narrow the gap, Masirah’s organisation and experience ensured a comfortable victory and a deserved title.

Following the final whistle, the patron crowned Masirah with the championship trophy and gold medals, while Al Amerat received the silver medals. The ceremony was held in a celebratory atmosphere, highlighting the success of the tournament, with a commemorative gift presented to the patron in recognition of her support for women’s sports.


This season’s league featured five teams: Sohar, Salalah, Al Ittihad, Masirah and Al Amerat, the competition was marked by enthusiasm and closely contested matches, reflecting the noticeable development of women’s handball and the growing participation base in Oman.

Dr Ahood al Balushi praised the significant progress of women’s sport in Oman, noting that Omani women are increasingly present across various roles, whether as players, administrators, or referees. She emphasised that such participation reflects growing societal awareness of women’s empowerment and the importance of providing opportunities to showcase their capabilities. She added that both domestic and international competitions play a vital role in developing players’ skills and enhancing Oman’s presence on the global sporting stage.


Meanwhile, Moosa bin Khamis al Balushi, Chairman of the Oman Handball Association, expressed satisfaction with the season, describing it as competitive and progressive both technically and organisationally, highlighted the importance of cooperation between the Association and clubs in ensuring the success of competitions and praised the level displayed in the women’s league.

Abeer bint Issa al Zadjali noted that the tournament concluded successfully despite some challenges, including the absence or withdrawal of certain teams. She stressed that these factors did not affect the overall quality of competition and pointed to growing interest in women’s handball, added that the Women’s Committee is working on expanding participation and strengthening talent development programmes to further elevate the sport in the coming years.
