Macron: French soldier was killed in Lebanon

Deliberate Attack
A French contingent of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) patrols the area as displaced residents waving Hezbollah flags make their way back to their homes on a makeshift road, built at the site where the Qasmieh bridge was destroyed in Israeli strikes, in the southern Lebanese area of Al-Qasmiyeh on April 18, 2026. Israel and Lebanon agreed to a 10-day ceasefire on April 16 in order to negotiate an end to six weeks of war between Israel and the Iran-backed group Hezbollah. The conflict saw massive Israeli airstrikes across Lebanon and also a ground invasion in the south. (Photo by MAHMOUD ZAYYAT / AFP)

A French soldier who was part of international Forces stationed in southern Lebanon was killed, President Emmanuel Macron said on Saturday, adding that evidence suggests Lebanese group Hezbollah was responsible for the attack. Three other soldiers were wounded and have been evacuated, Macron said in a post on X, urging the Lebanese government to act against the alleged perpetrators. The soldiers were part of the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL). UNIFIL said initial assessments indicated the fire came from non-state actors, allegedly Hezbollah, and that an investigation had been launched into what it described as "a deliberate attack." — Reuters
