MUSCAT: For the first time in the Sultanate of Oman, Al Nahdha Hospital succeeded in localising the operations on expanding the eye socket to treat patients who suffer from thyroid eye disease. The achievement was a step forward in providing advanced medical care in line with the latest international standards.

Dr Al Yaqdhan al Ghafri, Director of Al Nahdha Hospital (Consultant in Corrective Eyelid Surgery, Tear Duct Surgery and Eye Orbit Surgery), said that three successful operations of this type have been performed so far, and that many patients are on the waiting list for similar operations to be conducted over the next few months.

“Such operations fall within the category of advanced surgical interventions. They are conducted to treat the bulging of the eye and to remedy high pressure inside the eye socket that results from thyroid gland disorders," said Dr Al Yaqdhan.

He pointed out that such surgeries contribute to minimising serious complications that may threaten the safety of vision — including optic nerve damage or vision loss. The operations also reduce accompanying symptoms like dry eye and inability to completely close the eyelids, he observed.

Dr Al Yaqdhan explained that localising these operations has been the outcome of efforts made by the Ministry of Health, represented by the Directorate-General of Khoula Hospital. He noted that the step helps limit the need to travel for treatment abroad. - ONA
