MUSCAT: The Ministry of Education has announced the switch to distance education and the activation of e-learning platforms across all public and private schools, universities and colleges in the governorates of Al Dakhiliyah, Al Sharqiyah North, Al Sharqiyah South and Al Wusta, as well as in the Wilayats of Al Amerat and Qurayat within Muscat Governorate. This measure will take effect on Wednesday, with regular in-person instruction scheduled to resume the following day (Thursday).
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the ministry clarified that this decision was made in response to a notification from the National Emergency Management Centre regarding the impact of a trough associated with the 'Al Furat' low-pressure system on several governorates of the Sultanate of Oman. The move underscores the ministry's commitment to ensuring the safety of all students and staff across schools and higher education institutions.
The ministry has urged students and staff to exercise the highest degree of caution, adhere strictly to all guidance and alerts issued by the competent authorities, and remain vigilant throughout the period.
Meanwhile, the centre has reported that the governorates of Al Dhahirah, Al Dakhiliyah, Al Sharqiyah North, Al Sharqiyah South, Al Wusta, the southern parts of Muscat Governorate, and the mountainous areas of Al Batinah South Governorate will be affected by rainfall of varying intensity, occasionally accompanied by thunderstorms and active winds on Wednesday. The expected impact level is low to moderate.
The National Multi-Hazard Early Warning Centre at the Civil Aviation Authority has issued an alert regarding rainfall of varying intensity that may lead to the flow of wadis, as well as active winds with speeds ranging between 18 and 35 knots, along with reduced horizontal visibility during rainfall.
Additionally, parts of the governorates of Muscat, Musandam, Al Buraimi, Al Batinah North and Dhofar are expected to be affected by scattered light to moderate rainfall, occasionally accompanied by thunderstorms, with a low (limited) impact level. — ONA
