MUSCAT, MARCH 28
In a swift response to the impacts of the recent Al Masarat low-pressure system, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Planning (MoHUP) has announced that affected residents can submit assistance requests through the ministry’s official website within five days of the end of the weather event. The initiative aims to provide immediate support to affected families and accelerate the assessment and remediation of damages.
The announcement coincided with a series of field visits by officials targeting areas most affected or at risk of flooding in Muscat and Al Batinah South governorates. The ministry reaffirmed its commitment to providing rapid and effective support to affected families, allowing residents to report damages online for immediate evaluation and assistance. The five-day submission window highlights the ministry’s proactive approach and readiness to address challenges posed by extreme weather events, ensuring the safety and well-being of communities.
In Muscat, the inspections covered Bausher, Al Seeb and Muttrah, assessing the extent of damage, evaluating the efficiency of rainwater drainage systems and wadi channels, and identifying challenges that contributed to water accumulation affecting roads and public safety.
In Al Batinah South, the visits included Wadi Al Ajil in Wadi Al Maawil and several locations in Barka. The teams examined residential areas, drainage infrastructure and the level of impact caused by the weather event.
Preliminary observations revealed that some residential areas located in low-lying areas or along wadi paths experienced water accumulation, while obstructions in drainage channels hindered water flow, affecting roads and public safety. The inspections also included Sultan Haitham City, where officials reviewed modern urban planning practices in sustainable rainwater management and resilient infrastructure design.
Officials emphasised the need for urgent interventions, including clearing wadi channels and improving drainage efficiency, alongside long-term planning solutions such as infrastructure upgrades, updated urban planning standards, and the use of advanced technologies, including hydrological modelling and drones. These measures aim to enhance city preparedness, reduce flood risks and improve urban living conditions.
