Muscat:The Sultanate of Oman is set to witness the vernal (spring) equinox on Friday, March 20, marking the official astronomical beginning of spring in the Northern Hemisphere.

According to the Astronomical Affairs Department, the equinox will occur at 6:46 pm Oman time, when the Sun crosses the celestial equator heading northwards. This phenomenon results in nearly equal durations of day and night across the globe.

The March equinox is a significant astronomical event, as it signals the transition of seasons. While it heralds the start of spring in the Northern Hemisphere, it simultaneously marks the onset of autumn in the Southern Hemisphere.

During this period, the Earth’s axis is neither tilted towards nor away from the Sun, leading to a balanced distribution of sunlight. The event is observed twice a year, with the second occurrenc, the autumnal equinox, taking place in September.

Astronomy enthusiasts and observers in Oman can expect stable weather patterns accompanying this seasonal shift, as the country gradually transitions into warmer spring conditions.

The Astronomical Affairs Department encourages the public to follow such celestial events, which highlight the precision of Earth’s movements and their direct impact on life and climate across the planet.
