The Sultanate of Oman participated in the emergency leaders’ conference on regional developments, held via video conference, on Monday.
The conference was attended by representatives of GCC countries, Arab leaders as well as representatives of the Republic of Türkiye and Republic of Armenia, the President of the European Council and the President of the European Commission.
Sayyid Badr bin Hamad al Busaidy, Foreign Minister, represented the Sultanate of Oman at the meeting.
The participants discussed the situation in the region in light of the war waged by the United States and Israel against the Islamic Republic of Iran, and its repercussions on regional security and stability. They also discussed ways to de-escalate the military situation and bolster diplomatic efforts aimed at containing the crisis.
In his address to the conference, Sayyid Badr underscored the Sultanate of Oman’s solidarity with the GCC countries and other Arab states in confronting any violations of their sovereignty or attacks on their territories and infrastructure.
He reiterated the Sultanate of Oman’s position that the US-Israeli military attacks on the Islamic Republic of Iran represent a violation of international law, warning that the continuation of military operations could worsen the crisis and pose a serious threat to the international legal order which forms the basis of global security and stability.
The foreign minister stressed the importance of adopting a balanced and responsible approach in dealing with the current developments in a manner that contributes to breaking the cycle of escalation and enhances collective commitment to the principles of international law. He affirmed that a diplomatic solution is the only path for addressing the root causes of the crisis, calling for efforts to achieve a ceasefire with an international mandate that would create the necessary conditions for a return to diplomacy.
REGIONAL ESCALATION
Sayyid Badr received a telephone call from Anwar Ibrahim, Prime Minister of Malaysia.
During the call, the two sides exchanged views regarding the current escalation in the region. Both sides underscored the convergence of their nations' stances on prioritising efforts to cease the Israeli-American military campaign against the Islamic Republic of Iran. They addressed its ramifications, including the targeting of several neighbouring states, alongside the broader implications for supply routes, maritime navigation and the global economy.
The Malaysian Prime Minister expressed his deep appreciation for the wise policy of His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik and the diplomatic and humanitarian role undertaken by the Sultanate of Oman. He particularly lauded Oman's exceptional mediation efforts in support of regional peace and security.
For his part, Sayyid Badr reaffirmed the Sultanate of Oman’s commitment to its consistent and balanced policy, emphasising its adherence to prioritising diplomatic and peaceful solutions above all other considerations. — ONA
