BERLIN: The Sultanate of Oman, represented by the Authority for Public Services Regulation (APSR), has signed a memorandum of understanding with the University of Rostock in Germany to strengthen cooperation in sustainable waste management and the development of circular economy solutions.
The agreement forms part of APSR’s efforts to benefit from international expertise in resource management and maximise the economic value of waste, supporting Oman’s transition towards circular economic models and greater environmental sustainability.
The MoU was signed by Hassan bin Mohammed al Lawati, Director-General of Economic Regulation and Markets at APSR, and Professor Elisabeth, Rector of the University of Rostock.
The partnership aims to advance scientific and technical cooperation in developing modern waste management models based on global best practices. Areas of focus include raising environmental awareness, encouraging waste segregation at source, improving recycling efficiency, reducing dependence on landfills and converting waste into economically valuable resources.
The agreement also seeks to strengthen institutional capabilities within APSR by developing human resources and regulatory frameworks related to the waste management sector. Drawing on Germany’s extensive experience, the collaboration will support the formulation of modern regulatory policies and strategies aimed at improving efficiency and environmental performance in Oman’s waste sector.
As part of the programme surrounding the signing, the Omani delegation visited research laboratories and facilities at the University of Rostock, as well as operational sites of a waste management company in the city. The visits showcased advanced technologies and practical applications in waste treatment and resource recovery.
Specialised discussions were also held to explore opportunities for joint research and technical cooperation in developing innovative solutions that support the circular economy.
The ceremony was attended by Maitha bint Saif al Mahrouqi, The Sultanate of Oman's Ambassador to the Federal Republic of Germany, along with academics and specialists in waste management and environmental sustainability. — ONA
