The World Wildlife Day is celebrated on March 3rd every year, and this year the Environment Authority celebrated the frankincense tree.

According to the United Nations, World Wildlife Day is an opportunity to celebrate the many beautiful and varied forms of wild fauna and flora, to raise awareness of their many benefits, and to remind us of the urgent need to step up the fight against wildlife crime and human-induced reduction of species, which have wide-ranging economic, environmental, and social impacts.

A historical and cultural heritage of the Sultanate of Oman, the frankincense tree for thousands of years has generously contributed to traditional medicine, the perfume industry, and incense, stated the Environment Authority.

In 2026 the theme of World Wildlife Day was “Medicinal and Aromatic Plants: Conserving Health, Heritage, and Livelihoods”, highlighting the vital role of these plants in sustaining human health, cultural heritage, and local livelihoods and showcasing the growing pressures they face from habitat loss, overharvesting, and climate change.

In its announcement, the Environment Authority described frankincense as a natural treasure that reflects biodiversity and embodies the Omani person's connection to his environment across the ages.

"For thousands of years, it has generously contributed to traditional medicine, perfumery, and incense making," it added.

The benefits and characteristics of the frankincense tree:

It produces an aromatic substance that is collected after the trunk is scratched.

It contains natural antibacterial and anti-inflammatory compounds.

It is used in the manufacture of essential oils and skincare products.

It is of economic importance to the people of the regions where it grows.

It possesses therapeutic properties for treating certain health problems.

The frankincense tree has its share of threats: overgrazing, insect infestations, unsustainable frankincense harvesting methods, nearby quarrying and crushing activities, increasingly volatile climatic phenomena, and pest infestation.

According to the United Nations, the day celebrates the incalculable value of wildlife.

People everywhere rely on wildlife and biodiversity-based resources to meet their needs—from food to fuel, medicines, housing, and clothing.

It stated, "For us to enjoy the benefits and the beauty that nature brings us and our planet, people have been working together to make sure ecosystems are able to thrive and plant and animal species are able to exist for future generations."
