MUSCAT, FEB 22

As Ramadhan unfolds, Oman’s long-standing traditions of compassion, generosity and community support are once again taking centre stage. Across Muscat Governorate, these values are being translated into organised action through Social Development Committees operating under the supervision of the Governor’s Offices in each wilayat, ensuring that charitable initiatives are coordinated, transparent and far-reaching.

Working in line with the framework set by the Ministry of Social Development through Decision No (217/2024), the committees are tasked with identifying priority social initiatives, encouraging volunteerism and improving the living conditions of low-income families.

Their responsibilities also include supporting income-generating opportunities for limited-income groups and persons with disabilities while coordinating with relevant entities to ensure assistance reaches eligible beneficiaries effectively.

During Ramadhan, the committees take on an especially active role, functioning as coordination platforms that bring together volunteer groups, government bodies and private sector partners.

Through collaboration with businesses and traders, Ramadan food parcels and shopping vouchers are distributed to families in need in cooperation with the Oman Charitable Organisation. The structured approach not only eases financial pressures on households but also reinforces the spirit of unity that defines the holy month.

Across Muscat, initiatives are implemented through close cooperation between the Social Development Committees and local volunteer teams.

In Bausher, the committee supervises the distribution of Ramadhan assistance according to approved guidelines. The Nidaa Charity Team runs daily Iftar meal distributions for fasting individuals while also delivering food baskets to registered families. Activities for children are also organised to promote values of generosity and encourage creativity and social awareness.

In Muttrah, the Muttrah Charity Team implements several initiatives under committee supervision. The widely recognised 'Iftar Saem' programme distributes meals at mosques and reaches expatriate workers and residents in remote areas.

Meanwhile, 'Sallat Al Khair' provides food baskets to families in need, and the 'Farhatuhum' initiative offers Eid clothing and celebrations for children from social security families and orphans.

Al Seeb has introduced the 'Fak Kurba' initiative, which supports individuals struggling with debt. The programme is complemented by consumer festivals and Iftar gatherings organised in cooperation with community teams and the Omani Women’s Association, reflecting a broader approach that addresses both immediate and longer-term needs.

In Qurayat, Ramadhan activities include food baskets and meat distributions, daily Iftar programmes, the 'Joy of an Orphan' initiative and participation in debt-relief efforts. Awareness programmes are also organised to serve different segments of society.

While Ramadhan remains a focal point for charitable activity, Social Development Committees are increasingly focused on sustainable impact. Many initiatives now extend beyond the holy month, including income-generating projects, periodic assistance programmes and partnerships with the private sector.

Through these structured and collaborative efforts, Muscat Governorate presents a model of organised volunteerism where compassion is supported by planning and partnership. In doing so, Ramadhan becomes not only a season of giving but also a catalyst for lasting community development and social resilience.
