Blood donors urged to step forward during Ramadhan

Blood donors across the country are being urged to support the national blood donation drive by contributing blood and platelet units at the nearest blood banks or by visiting the Department of Blood Bank Services in Bausher, where stocks often run low during the holy month of Ramadhan.

Donation services remain open throughout the day. While non-fasting individuals may donate during daytime hours, those observing the fast are encouraged to donate after Iftar, provided they meet the basic eligibility criteria.

The Department of Blood Bank Services frequently issues appeals during Ramadhan as donor turnout tends to decline. In a typical month, the Central Blood Bank requires between 2,700 and 2,900 blood units and around 260 to 270 platelet units to meet patient demand.

To address the shortage, authorities have confirmed that donation services are functioning as usual. Fasting donors are especially encouraged to donate after breaking their fast, between 7.30 pm and 11.30 pm.

Health officials say the need remains urgent. “The Muscat Governorate alone requires an average of around 120 blood units daily and more than 5,000 units monthly. The situation is critical, and we call on donors to come forward and help save lives,” a source close to the Bausher blood bank said.

During Ramadhan, the blood bank also conducts donation campaigns in mosques and markets as the number of donors typically drops because many Muslims prefer to donate after Iftar.

At the same time, hospitals continue to require a steady supply of blood for patients, including those with genetic blood disorders such as sickle cell anaemia and thalassemia, cancer patients, accident victims and individuals undergoing major surgeries.

Officials say the goal is to collect more than 2,900 blood units and 270 platelet units during the month to meet urgent medical needs across the Sultanate of Oman.

“Join us in saving lives and offering hope to those in need,” the Department of Blood Bank Services said in its appeal.

This year, the department is organising more than 20 blood donation campaigns in mosques and malls across Muscat to help maintain a steady supply.

Blood can be donated daily at the Central Blood Bank from 7.30 pm to 11.30 pm, as well as in the morning from Sunday to Thursday between 8 am and 12.30 pm.
