

MUSCAT: Abdullah bin Mohammed Bamkhalaf, Secretary-General of Oman Olympic Committee, and Dr Marwan bin Juma al Juma, Board Member, participated in the 46th General Assembly of the Olympic Council of Asia, held on Monday, in the Uzbek capital, Tashkent.
The assembly witnessed the election of Shaikh Joaan bin Hamad al Thani as President of the Olympic Council of Asia, becoming the 22nd president of the Olympic movement in the continent since the first multi-sport Asian Games were held in 1913. The election was attended by all representatives of the Asian National Olympic Committees and included the presence of Shavkat Mirziyoyev, President of the Republic of Uzbekistan.
In his speech, Shaikh Joaan emphasised that Asia is the largest and most diverse continent, noting that this diversity represents one of the greatest sources of strength, which requires working with a spirit of unity and mutual respect. He also highlighted the importance of empowering National Olympic Committees and providing young athletes with a platform to excel on the international sports stage.
During the assembly, it was also approved that Qatar will host the 47th General Assembly of the Olympic Council of Asia next year, with the date to be announced later. The assembly witnessed the signing of hosting agreements for the Asian Youth Games in 2029 in Tashkent and in 2031 in Cambodia, in addition to reviewing the preparatory reports for upcoming events, including the Asian Beach Games in Sanya, China 2026, the Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games in Saudi Arabia and the 20th Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan.
