

Muscat: The organising committee of the 11th Shotokan Karate Centre Open Championship has officially revealed details of the upcoming edition, which will be hosted at the Ahli Sidab Sports Hall in Darsait as part of the Muscat Nights festival from January 30 to 31, 2026. The announcement was made during a press conference held on Sunday evening at Second Cup Cafe in Al Qurum.
At the beginning of the conference, international referee Yousuf al Siyabi, Chairman of the Championship’s Technical Committee, presented a comprehensive overview of the event’s objectives and background. He noted that this year’s edition marks the 11th in the tournament’s history and the second to be held under the Muscat Nights umbrella, expressing hope that it will continue to feature annually following the success of previous editions.
Al Siyabi highlighted the championship’s strong international character, emphasising the organising committee’s commitment to attracting wide regional and overseas participation. Teams and clubs from Oman, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar and Kuwait will compete, alongside participants from Algeria, Libya, Iran and Sudan. He added that the repeated participation of several countries reflects growing confidence in the tournament’s reputation and organisational standards.
This year’s championship will feature 400 male and female athletes representing more than 30 clubs, centres and academies, including 160 female competitors. Participants will compete in both kata and kumite events across 54 teams, with 20 teams in kata and 34 in kumite. Male competitors account for 240 athletes. The matches will be overseen by 37 certified referees, supported by 30 organisers to ensure smooth technical and administrative operations over the two days of competition.
Al Siyabi also confirmed the continued inclusion of inclusive sports categories, with participation from Al Tadhamun Wheelchair Team of Sohar Club and the Oman Down Syndrome Association team. Reaffirming the right of everyone to compete in sport and develop their skills in a supportive and encouraging environment.
Beyond competition, the championship promotes karate, nurtures young talent and fair play, while showcasing Oman’s culture and hospitality to international visitors and supporting tourism through its link with Muscat Nights.
KEY FIXTURE
International referee Hilal al Abdali, Head of the Championship’s Media Committee, described the event as a key fixture in the Oman Karate Committee’s calendar, organised by an experienced national team to ensure high professional standards. He added that the championship also supports tourism. In previous editions, several delegations arrived days early to enjoy Muscat Nights events, enhancing the festival’s international appeal.
Meanwhile, Hussain al Rumhi, Supervisor of Sports and Beach Events at Muscat Nights, said the championship goes beyond sport, carrying economic, cultural and tourism benefits. By attracting teams and fans, it boosts local activity, strengthens Oman’s reputation as an international host, and highlights the synergy between sport, entertainment and culture.
The championship will also feature accompanying activities, including a technical lecture for coaches on January 29 at Ahli Sidab Club’s lecture hall to discuss regulations and the latest competition updates, aimed at enhancing teams’ technical readiness.
