The Sultanate of Oman and the United Kingdom (UK) discussed bilateral friendship and cooperation between them and ways to enhance the strategic partnership in various political, economic, developmental and investment fields.
This included following up on the outcomes of the Strategic Dialogue Team and the Joint Working Group, and accomplishing the programmes and work tracks previously agreed upon by both sides, in a bid to serve common interests and broaden the prospects of bilateral cooperation.
This came during a meeting held in London on Monday between Sayyid Badr bin Hamad al Busaidy, Foreign Minister, and Yvette Cooper, Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs of the United Kingdom (UK).
On regional issues, the two sides exchanged viewpoints on a number of developments of mutual interest, including the situation in Yemen, Sudan and Iran.
The two ministers affirmed the importance of supporting efforts aimed at solidifying the truce in Yemen and enhancing pathways for comprehensive political dialogue, which would guarantee Yemen's unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity.
They also discussed developments in Gaza Strip and the need to redouble humanitarian efforts to alleviate the suffering faced by the population in the Strip, in addition to intensifying international efforts to reach a permanent ceasefire, supporting reconstruction endeavours, and reviving the peace process in accordance with the two-state solution and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state.
Regarding the Iranian nuclear file, the two ministers affirmed the importance of creating conditions conducive to reviving the diplomatic track and resuming negotiations in a way that contributes to reducing regional tensions, enhances security and stability in the region, and spares it the risks of escalation and conflicts.
As for Sudan, the two ministers addressed the tragic humanitarian situation and the necessity of exerting efforts to reach a cessation of hostilities and establish a truce that would allow UN relief agencies to perform their humanitarian tasks and pave the way for achieving political consensus among the conflicting parties. — ONA
