Elvis Presley fans and tribute artists kicked off their annual journey to the Elvis Festival in the Australian regional town of Parkes on Wednesday, marking the beginning of one of the country’s most distinctive music celebrations. Enthusiasts, dressed head-to-toe in iconic Elvis-style clothing featuring sequined jumpsuits, flared pants, sunglasses and pompadour wigs, converged on Central Station in Sydney before embarking on a 357 km (222 miles) westward journey aboard the Elvis Express, a special train organised exclusively for the festival.
The seven-hour railway trip transforms the journey itself into a rolling tribute to the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll, featuring a continuous line-up of Elvis-themed entertainment. Passengers are treated to live performances by tribute artists, sing-alongs of classic hits, themed décor and an atmosphere that blends nostalgia with celebration. The train has become a cherished tradition for festivalgoers, many of whom return year after year as part of the experience.
“For the last two years I’ve been told how incredible this festival is”, said Louis Brown, an Elvis tribute artist who flew from the United Kingdom to attend the event. “I made the conscious decision to come this year and I’m already thankful that I’ve come, one day in”. Brown is among many international visitors drawn to Parkes by the festival’s reputation as one of the largest Elvis celebrations in the Southern Hemisphere.
Organisers of the Parkes Elvis Festival, which typically takes place during the second week of January each year, expect around 24,000 attendees. The influx of visitors effectively doubles the town’s permanent population, bringing a significant boost to local businesses and transforming Parkes into a vibrant hub of music, costumes and Elvis-inspired festivities for several days. — Reuters
