ROP marks Police Day with cadet graduation, achievements

The Royal Oman Police (ROP) is celebrating the Police Day which falls on January 5 each year, with colourful celebrations and graduation of new officials to the force.
With relentless efforts in digitising the services to the public and staying updated constantly, the ROP, known to be one of the best police forces in the world, is proud to have international mentions which were transformed in to as many as 35 accolades from various countries.
The major, outstanding accomplishments, according to, Colonel Abdullah bin Salem al Buraiki, Director of the Police Sports Federation, include the Royal Oman Police Shooting Team securing third place in the Sultan's Armed Forces Shooting Championship, achieving third place in the Arab Police Shooting Championship in both the men's and women's categories held in Tunisia, winning first place in the women's category and second place in the men's category at the 43rd Annual Shooting Championship in the United Arab Emirates, and securing second place in the Gulf Police One-Armed Shooting Championship held in Kuwait.

Shaikh Abdul Malik bin Abdullah al Khalili, Chairman of the State Council will patronise the ROP annual day celebrations while Sultan Qaboos Academy for Police Sciences in Nizwa will host the graduation of officer cadets and a skills development course for officers today.

This year, the Day is not just about celebrating the formation of the ROP and a commemoration of achievements in the areas of security and service, but also of various fields supporting national development, including sports.

"It aims to equip police personnel with comprehensive athletic skills through regular sporting activities, diverse training courses, and participation in both domestic and international competitions. This strategy has progressed steadily and consistently, positively impacting the performance and results achieved by the Federation in the past period.”

When it comes to the Police Sports Federation international partnerships, Colonel Abdullah al Buraiki emphasised that the Federation is committed to establishing international partnerships and that these achievements are besides the international partnerships and programmes for exchanging expertise with Arab and global police sports federations.

“This aims to develop sports methods, enhance international cooperation, and benefit from best practices in police sports management,” said Al Buraiki.

Oman’s Police Sports Federation is a member of the International Police Sports Union, the Arab Police Sports Federation, and the Gulf Police Sports Federations.

Waleed al Khafif, a renowned journalist and sports analyst, who said the Police Sports Federation is a valuable asset to Omani sports and a key source of talent for clubs, expressed his appreciation for the pivotal role played by the Royal Oman Police through its sports federation as a cornerstone of the sports system in the Sultanate of Oman.

“These achievements align with a comprehensive national vision that views sports as a means to build a well-rounded personality and promotes the values of fair competition, belonging, and excellence.”

A Strategic Vision:

In addition to providing comprehensive logistical support, the Police Sports Federation relies on meticulous technical and administrative planning according to specific timelines. This includes securing facilities and playing fields, providing sports equipment and supplies, medical and first aid supplies, and transportation for participating teams.

Application of modern technologies:

Colonel Abdullah al Buraiki pointed out that the Police Sports Federation benefits from modern technologies by implementing electronic refereeing systems in sports and cultural tournaments and competitions. This ensures accuracy, fairness, and credibility in results and contributes to improving performance and organization.

Supporting national teams and clubs:

The ROP spares no stones unturned in establishing cooperation with national bodies and it has established strong cooperation with national sports institutions and Omani clubs in various fields includes exchanging expertise and sending coaches and administrators to participate in advanced training courses and workshops.

The Federation also contributes to supporting national teams by providing players, coaches, and referees in several sports. Furthermore, there are active police officers involved in local clubs across various competitions, which contributes to raising the level of competition and developing athletic performance.

Training coaches, referees, and administrators:

The Federation is committed to training sports personnel through specialised training courses in various sports, organising workshops for referees and administrators, and providing the necessary technical and administrative support to develop their skills and enhance their efficiency. This serves the police sports system and keeps pace with the demands of sports development.

Women in sports

Colonel Abdullah al Buraiki explained that the Police Sports Federation gives special attention to women's sports by supporting women's participation in various sporting championships, such as athletics, shooting, and table tennis, in addition to cultural activities and refereeing. The Federation also works to empower women in sports management and leadership committees, thus strengthening their presence and active role in the police sports system.
