The cities of Trenčín in Slovakia and Oulu in Finland have been officially designated as the European Capitals of Culture for the year 2026. The announcement places both cities at the centre of a major European cultural initiative that seeks to highlight creativity, heritage and cultural expression across the continent. Each year, the European Union selects specific cities for this title as part of a long-standing strategic programme aimed at showcasing the vast cultural diversity found within Europe’s regions.
The European Capitals of Culture programme is designed to celebrate the distinct arts, history and traditions that define each host city and its surrounding area. Through this designation, selected cities are encouraged to present cultural programmes that reflect their identity while also emphasising shared European values. The initiative provides an opportunity for cities to bring local culture into a broader European spotlight and to strengthen cultural dialogue across borders.
Trenčín and Oulu will take over the title from the 2025 European Capitals of Culture, which included Chemnitz in the German state of Saxony, as well as the cross-border twin cities of Nova Gorica in Slovenia and Gorizia in Italy. This succession reflects the programme’s commitment to geographic balance and cultural variety, ensuring that different regions of Europe are represented over time.
As European Capitals of Culture, Trenčín and Oulu are expected to serve as platforms for artistic expression and cultural engagement throughout 2026. The title emphasises not only established cultural heritage but also contemporary creativity, encouraging communities to reflect on their cultural identity and future direction. The programme also aims to foster greater public participation in cultural life, drawing attention to local traditions while inviting broader European audiences to engage with them.
By naming Trenčín and Oulu as European Capitals of Culture for 2026, the European Union continues its effort to underline the importance of culture as a unifying force. The designation highlights culture as a key element of social connection, shared understanding and mutual appreciation across Europe’s diverse regions. — ONA
