Indiscriminate use of painkillers, especially Brufen (ibuprofen), may harm certain patients, warns the Ministry of Health (MoH). These medicines must be used only after a doctor's advice. According to studies, it may also cause antibiotic resistance if used for a long time and without medical advice.

As part of its ongoing efforts to enhance awareness in the community, the ministry published educational material through its official platforms aimed at promoting a culture of safe medication use under the slogan “Leading and Sustainable Health for All.”

Brufen is known for its anti-inflammatory properties, making it a common choice for treating a variety of medical conditions. It is typically used to relieve joint and muscle pain, toothache and post-surgical pain, in addition to easing symptoms of colds and influenza.

Health guidelines indicate that the usual dose for adults and children aged 12 years and above ranges between 200 and 400 mg as needed.

Despite the widespread use of Brufen as an analgesic, caution is required when using Brufen in individuals with asthma, as the medication may, in some cases, exacerbate respiratory symptoms, making it essential to consult a doctor before use. It is also advised to avoid its use in patients with stomach ulcers or gastric irritation, due to the potential for increased gastrointestinal irritation or the risk of bleeding.

The uncontrolled use of Brufen may affect kidney and liver function, particularly when taken for long periods or in high doses. Those facing kidney or liver ailments must strictly avoid self-medication.

The MoH warned against using the medication in children under one year of age except under direct medical supervision that determines the appropriate dose and method of use.

Dr Muna Mohammed explained that Brufen is considered a safe medication but the risk lies not in the drug itself but in misuse or overdose. She stated that individuals should not regard painkillers as simple medications that can be taken without regulation, as the random use of Brufen may lead to health complications, particularly among patients with gastrointestinal, kidney, or asthma conditions.

She stressed the importance of adhering to prescribed doses and avoiding the combination of Brufen with other medications from the same class without consulting a doctor.

She also called for immediately discontinuing the medication if any unusual side effects appear and consulting a physician to assess the condition.

She said medication awareness is a fundamental part of preventive healthcare, stating that adherence to medical instructions significantly contributes to achieving therapeutic benefits and avoiding risks.
