MUSCAT: The Sur International Conference (Historical and Cultural Dimension), held from December 7 to 10, concluded with extensive participation from prominent international academics, researchers and experts who presented 34 scholarly papers covering various themes.

The conference served as a scientific and research platform aimed at documenting the historical and cultural depth of Sur and highlighting its contributions in various fields. The goal was to restore Sur’s established historical and cultural standing by exploring its deep historical roots, cultural and social heritage, archaeological and architectural landmarks, and its geopolitical role in its regional and international environment throughout history. Additionally, the conference aimed to examine the developmental aspect of the wilayat within the framework of Oman Vision 2040 and the future opportunities it offers for enhancing the region’s cultural and economic presence.

Dr Hamed Karhila Hamad, a participating researcher from the Comoros Islands, commented, “The conference was distinguished by the presence of many researchers and academics from Arab and Islamic countries who actively contributed to shaping the cultural impact and positive interaction between the rich heritage of the Sultanate of Oman and the surrounding region. We hope that it will yield positive results for the future of history and cultural progress and prosperity in the Arab world, and this region in particular. The Wilayat of Sur played a vital and historically significant role in past eras, as it was an extension of the Omani Empire.”

The conference sessions included discussions on economic and tourism development, as well as the cultural and social dimensions of Sur. Traditional equestrian arts were showcased.
