MUSCAT: Sur International Conference (Historical and Cultural Dimension) commenced its four-day proceedings on Sunday, under the auspices of Shaikh Dr Hilal bin Ali al Habsi, Wali of Sur. It aims to highlight the historical and cultural role of the Wilayat of Sur, deepen research into its maritime and cultural heritage, and enhance its scholarly presence within the historical studies landscape of the region.

The conference serves as a national and academic platform seeking to restore the established historical and cultural standing of the Wilayat of Sur by exploring its deep historical roots, its cultural and social heritage, its archaeological and architectural landmarks, and its geopolitical role in its regional and international environment throughout history.

Shaikh Dr Hilal bin Ali al Habsi, Chairman of the Main Organising Committee, emphasised the importance of the conference and its role and he stated. "This conference aims to present an advanced scientific vision based on sound research methodologies. It combines historical presentation with cultural analysis and relies on academic research tools to document the contributions of the Wilayat of Sur in the fields of navigation, shipbuilding, international relations commercial and cultural interaction, and its role in forming one of the most prominent centres of cultural exchange in the Indian Ocean," he said. He added that historical documents and oral traditions indicate that Omani ports and the port of Sur in particular were key stations on the frankincense and myrrh trade route, and that the people of Sur were pioneers of the seas who carried science, knowledge, and culture to other peoples.

Studying this heritage is an urgent necessity, not only to understand the past, but also to understand how this city contributed to shaping the Omani character throughout the ages. 34 research papers were presented across seven scientific sessions, highlighting the historical and cultural role of Sur and enhancing its scientific presence within the map of historical studies in the region.

The first day includes a field trip for participants from outside the Sultanate of Oman to visit the Al Ayjah Lighthouse and the Ras Al Hadd Science Center. Visits will continue over the following days to archaeological and historical sites in Qalhat, Tiwi, and Wadi Al Shab, culminating in a boat trip to conclude the conference.

The conference seeks to document Sur's maritime, commercial, and cultural legacy, showcasing its role in shaping Omani identity and solidifying its historical presence on the shipping and trade routes of the Indian Ocean and the Arabian Gulf. It also aims to shed light on Sur's pioneering role in traditional shipbuilding and its impact on regional and international trade, while simultaneously promoting multidisciplinary academic output, establishing Sur's position on the global research and tourism map, and opening avenues for deeper scholarly dialogue on the history and cultural depth of the region.
