

KHASAB: The Ministry of Health organised a health awareness day on human papillomavirus (HPV) and HIV at the Khasab Sports and Cultural Club on Sunday, under the auspices of Dr Ahmed bin Salim al Mandhari, Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Health for Planning and Health Regulation.
The two-day event featured specialised lectures, interactive activities, a health awareness exhibition, and presentations on community initiatives implemented by the General Directorate of Health Services in Musandam Governorate.
Ali bin Abdullah al Shehhi, Director General of Health Services in Musandam, highlighted the Ministry’s commitment to combating infectious diseases through prevention, early diagnosis, and appropriate treatment, emphasising the importance of collaboration between governmental and private sectors to enhance public health awareness.
Dr Sultan bin Mohammed al Lawati, Consultant of Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases at Al Rustaq Hospital, addressed the burden of HPV and its link to cancers such as cervical and oral cancer, noting the protective role of the vaccine recently added to the national immunisation programme.
Dr Aisha bint Sulaiman al Shehhiyah, Senior Consultant in Family Medicine at Dibba Hospital, presented insights on HIV transmission and the national strategy to combat Aids, highlighting achievements in reducing its health and social impact.
Dr Zayana bint Khalfan al Habsiyah, Head of the Immunodeficiency and Sexually Transmitted Diseases Programme, discussed the inclusion of infectious disease tests in the premarital medical examination programme, stressing early detection and timely treatment.
Dr Ali bin Ibrahim al Ghalib, Consultant in Immunodeficiency Diseases, reviewed recent updates in the HIV/Aids control programme.
The event concluded with recognition of participating students and schools in an awareness competition, as well as the lecturers and organising committee. — ONA
