MAQSHIN: The Al Mashash district in the Wilayat of Maqshin hosted a vibrant lineup of cultural and tourism activities as part of the Al Mashash Heritage and Tourism Festival, an event aimed at showcasing Dhofar’s rich desert heritage and boosting the governorate’s growing tourism season.

The festival opened with a warm reception for a tourist caravan arriving from Salalah, followed by traditional performances, cultural showcases and the popular 'Sand Challenge' — a high-adrenaline competition attracting four-wheel-drive enthusiasts from across Oman.

Organised by the Directorate-General of Heritage and Tourism in Dhofar, in cooperation with the Office of the Wali of Maqshin, the festival is part of broader efforts to promote domestic tourism and create new social and economic opportunities in desert areas. The event highlights the unique arts, traditional crafts and natural beauty of the Empty Quarter’s vast landscapes.

Mohammed bin Amer Jadad, Deputy Wali of Maqshin, said the event coincides with Oman’s celebrations of its glorious National Day, adding that government efforts to develop sandy regions include the construction of 170 km of internal roads to better connect Maqshin’s villages. This, he noted, enhances social stability, stimulates economic growth and strengthens the tourism sector.

He praised the support of the Governor of Dhofar’s Office, the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism, Dhofar Municipality, and several public and private entities. He also stressed the importance of media and community participation in promoting desert tourism, noting that this year’s programme offers a rich blend of cultural, artistic and adventure-based experiences.

Marwan bin Abdulhakim al Ghassani, Director of Tourism Promotion in Dhofar, said the ministry’s support includes organising the tourist caravan, staging four-wheel-drive competitions, and promoting Maqshin’s unique desert attractions as the winter tourism season begins. He noted that Maqshin is now firmly positioned on the itineraries of international tour operators, with rising interest from European, Asian and American visitors.

The festival also saw the opening of the Al Mashash Center for Quran Memorisation, along with a handicrafts and student exhibition showcasing traditional craftsmanship and youth creativity.

Artistic evenings, poetry recitals and heritage-themed performances enriched the two-day programme.

The event concluded with the recognition of winners, participants, sponsors and supporters. — ONA
