MUSCAT: HH Sayyid Bilarab bin Haitham al Said presided over a national ceremony marking the completion of more than RO 408 million worth of strategic water projects implemented by Nama Water Services Company. The event formed part of the Sultanate of Oman’s National Day celebrations and highlighted one of the country’s most significant infrastructure achievements in recent years.
The completed projects span the governorates of Al Dakhiliyah, Al Batinah North & South, Al Sharqiyah North & South and the Wilayat of Al Mudhaibi, forming a comprehensive upgrade to Oman’s water transmission and distribution systems. Collectively, they aim to meet rising demand from fast-growing residential areas, expanding industrial estates, tourism hubs and government services through Oman Vision 2040.
Nama Water Services CEO Qais bin Saud al Zakwani said the new systems will play a pivotal role in strengthening national water security by improving efficiency, expanding storage capacity and supporting future economic growth. He noted that the projects generated more than RO 112 million in local added value, including RO 44 million awarded to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The investments reflect the company’s commitment to supporting local industries and promoting national talent.
Across all governorates, the completed works include the installation of more than 620 km of main transmission pipelines and the construction of 27 strategic reservoirs with a combined storage capacity exceeding 615,000 cubic metres. Alongside civil and mechanical works, Nama also implemented modern monitoring and control systems, smart metering and digital solutions that have collectively reduced water loss by 15%. Additionally, more than 1,700 Omanis have been employed across support companies working under Nama Water Services.
One of the largest components is the RO 126 million project to reinforce water transmission in Al Dakhiliyah Governorate. This upgrade supports residential consumers, industrial zones under Madayn; and tourism and government sectors. The project added 174 km of pipelines and included the construction of a major strategic reservoir with a 350,000 m³ capacity in the Wilayat of Samayil, five additional reservoirs across pumping stations and five newly built pumping stations.
Another major initiative is the RO 129 million project to enhance the water system between the Al Sharqiyah North & South Governorates, beginning at the Asilah desalination plant. It features 312 km of large-diameter pipelines, four new pumping stations, three upgraded stations and 17 reservoirs with a total capacity of 265,000 m³. It also incorporates advanced monitoring and operational systems to ensure high reliability.
In Al Batinah North & South Governorates, a strategic RO 88 million pipeline between the Wilayats of Barka and Suhar strengthens the link between key desalination plants in Qurayat, Al Ghubra, Barka and Suhar. The project covers 140 km of pipelines, five pumping stations and reservoirs totalling 88,000 m³, ensuring stable supply across all wilayats in Al Batinah North & South Governorates.
The ceremony also marked the completion of Phase One of the Al Mudhaibi water network project, valued at RO 65 million. Covering villages such as Al Rawdah, Al Akhdar, Samad Al Shan and Khadra Bani Difa, the project includes 820 km of distribution networks, household connections and booster pumps. It will benefit 130,000 people by 2025, increasing to more than 154,000 by 2040.
Together, these projects represent a major leap forward in Oman’s water infrastructure, reinforcing long-term national water security and supporting sustainable development across the Sultanate of Oman. — ONA
