As Oman celebrates National Day of its Renaissance, the Sultanate of Oman reflects on over five decades of progress, stability, and visionary leadership. From bustling cities to serene date farms, Oman’s journey of peace, prosperity, and innovation is captured vividly in the photography of Nasser Hamed al Harthy, one of the country’s foremost contemporary photographers.
Known for his striking landscapes, wildlife photography, and portraits, Nasser has extensively documented the Al Tabseel date harvest season, a unique tradition in Wadi Al Abyad where villagers collectively own a single sprawling date farm.
“Capturing the harvest is more than taking pictures,” he says. “It’s about preserving a way of life, showing the connection between people, land, and tradition.” His portfolio provides a visual narrative of Oman’s cultural heritage and the harmony between modernity and tradition.
Since the dawn of Oman’s modern Renaissance in 1970 under Sultan Qaboos, the Sultanate of Oman has charted a remarkable course of development. Today, under His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik, Oman continues to advance toward Vision 2040, focusing on economic diversification, sustainable growth, and knowledge-based development.
Peace and stability remain the cornerstone of Oman’s identity. For over five decades, the nation has played a pivotal role in diplomacy and regional harmony. Economically, Oman has diversified into logistics, tourism, fisheries, manufacturing, and renewable energy. Education and healthcare have also expanded dramatically: from a handful of schools in 1970 to thousands of institutions nationwide, alongside modern hospitals and community health centres.
“Oman is a country of contrasts — ancient forts and modern infrastructure coexist beautifully,” Nasser reflects. “Through my lens, I try to tell stories that show Oman’s soul - its people, its heritage, and its vision for the future.”
Oman also prioritises environmental and cultural preservation, safeguarding Unesco World Heritage Sites such as Bahla Fort, the Aflaj Irrigation Systems, and the Land of Frankincense, while promoting wildlife conservation and eco-tourism. Women’s empowerment, digital transformation, and innovation hubs like Knowledge Oasis Muscat further demonstrate the nation’s commitment to inclusive progress.
As Oman marks Renaissance, Vision 2040 sets the course for continued economic, social, and technological development.
