The Ministry of Health (MOH) has urged people to take preventive measures against Mpox formerly Monkeypox), an infectious disease caused by the monkeypox virus.

According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, two types of the virus cause monkeypox, clade I and clade II. Both types spread the same way and can be prevented using the same methods. There have been more than 40,000 cases of clade I monkeypox in several countries in Central and Eastern Africa.

Clade II monkeypox cases continue to spread at low levels in many countries around the world.

What are the symptoms?

1. Often starts with a fever, headache, muscle aches, and fatigue (similar to flu-like symptoms).

2. This is followed by a distinct rash that can appear anywhere on the body, including the face, genitals, and anus.

3. The rash progresses from macules to papules to vesicles to pustules to scabs.

How does it spread?

Direct skin-to-skin contact with an infected person, especially with a rash.

Touching contaminated items like bedding, towels, and clothing.

Prolonged face-to-face contact (through respiratory droplets).

How to protect yourself:

Wash your hands frequently with soap and water.

Avoid close physical contact with anyone showing mpox symptoms.

Avoid touching contaminated objects

What to do if you have symptoms?

Seek medical advice immediately.

Isolate yourself and cover any lesions to protect others.
