MUSCAT: The Royal Hospital has successfully performed its first robotic surgery, a step that embodies the future vision of the health sector towards excellence and the adoption of advanced technologies in the field of microsurgery. The step constitutes a national medical breakthrough to be added to a series of achievements in the medical sector in the Sultanate of Oman.

Dr Qais bin Mohammed al Hooti, Consultant Urologist at the Royal Hospital, said that a urological surgery was performed involving a renal pelvic reconstruction and correction procedure for a patient suffering from ureteral stenosis. The operation lasted approximately two hours and was successful.

He pointed out that the surgical robot represents the pinnacle of advancement in the world of microsurgery. It gives surgeons unprecedented control and three-dimensional vision, enabling them to execute precise movements beyond the capabilities of the human hand, as well as easily accessing difficult and deep areas within the surgical field.

He stated that this system reduces the size of surgical incisions and blood loss, accelerating patient recovery while simultaneously increasing safety and reducing complications thus representing a qualitative leap towards more efficient and higher-quality surgery.

He added that the Royal Hospital seeks to expand the use of this technology to encompass various surgical specialities, such as urology, colorectal surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, hepatobiliary and gastrointestinal surgery, and cardiothoracic surgery, with a focus on training and developing national talent, so that the Sultanate of Oman becomes a leading regional centre in this field.

He stressed that this achievement is a practical embodiment of the goals of Oman Vision 2040 in building an advanced healthcare system based on innovation and modern technologies. It strengthens the healthcare system and supports the Sultanate of Oman’s aspirations to empower Omani personnel and prepare a generation of surgeons and technicians qualified in smart surgical techniques, thus solidifying its position as a leading regional centre in digital surgery and robotic medicine.

The surgical team overseeing the operation expressed their pride in this achievement, which represents a turning point in the history of Omani surgery. The surgical robot allows for a superior level of precision and control, reducing surgical complications and accelerating patient recovery compared to conventional methods.

They noted that this achievement would not have been possible without the continuous support of the Ministry of Health and the integrated efforts of the surgical, medical, and technical teams, within the framework of an ambitious national strategy aimed at enhancing the skills of Omani personnel and enabling them to utilise the latest global technologies.

This achievement is the culmination of years of planning, development, and adoption of the latest global advancements in surgery.
