MUSCAT: The Medical City for Military and Security Services, represented by Medical City Hospital in Al Khoud, has successfully performed its first vertebral fixation surgery using conscious regional anesthesia, eliminating the need for general anaesthesia. This breakthrough marks a major advancement in surgical care, reflecting the hospital’s commitment to adopting the latest international medical practices and offering safer, more modern treatment options.
This milestone paves the way for wider adoption of this advanced approach, which helps reduce complications and speed up recovery, particularly for patients with chronic conditions where general anaesthesia poses higher risks.
The hospital’s anaesthesia team skillfully managed the case, precisely adjusting sedation doses while maintaining full patient consciousness throughout the procedure, allowing real-time monitoring of neurological responses.
The nursing team played an essential role in preparing the patient both physically and psychologically, as well as providing continuous post-operative care.
Brigadier General Dr Saleh bin Saud al Abri, Director-General of Medical City Hospital for Military and Security Services - Muscat, stated that this successful surgery demonstrates the hospital’s readiness to adopt advanced techniques, further solidifying its role as a regional centre for surgical specialties and medical education.
Colonel Dr Ahmed bin Saif al Jahwari, Senior Consultant Spine Surgeon and Operating Surgeon, explained that conscious sedation surgeries are an ideal option for patients at high risk from general anaesthesia. He attributed this achievement to the seamless coordination between medical teams and the high competence of the hospital’s medical and nursing staff. - ONA
