Dhofar, Sur to round of 16 in HM’s Cup

MUSCAT: Dhofar Club staged a remarkable comeback to claim a 3–1 victory over Nizwa and secure their spot in the Round of 16 of His Majesty’s Football Cup, in a thrilling knockout match played this evening at Nizwa Sports Complex.


The match began with a high tempo from the home side, as Nizwa took the lead early on when Dhofar defender Naif Faraj mistakenly turned the ball into his own net, giving Nizwa a 1–0 advantage and sparking celebrations among their fans, Nizwa maintained the upper hand throughout much of the first half, creating several dangerous chances to double their lead but failing to capitalise on them.


Dhofar, on the other hand, struggled to find their rhythm in the opening stages but managed to create four clear opportunities that did not find the back of the net, thanks to strong goalkeeping from Nizwa, However, in the dying minutes of the first half, Dhofar were awarded a penalty, which Naif Faraj confidently converted redeeming his earlier mistake and levelling the score 1–1 before halftime.


The second half saw an open and balanced contest, with both teams pushing forward in search of a decisive goal, Nizwa tried to regain control, while Dhofar relied on their experience and composure to absorb pressure and launch quick counterattacks.


As the match entered its final stages, Dhofar’s persistence paid off, In the 83rd minute, Ammar Abid broke the deadlock with a well placed finish that gave his side the lead, Just four minutes later, Mohammed al Habsi sealed the victory with a third goal in the 87th minute, capitalising on a defensive lapse from Nizwa.


The win sends Dhofar through to the Round of 16, where they will face Al Shabab Club in what promises to be an exciting encounter between two strong sides, Despite the loss, Nizwa earned praise for their spirited performance and determination against one of Oman’s top clubs.


With this result, Dhofar continue their quest to reclaim glory in the prestigious His Majesty’s Cup, a competition that remains the crown jewel of Omani football.


In another match, Sur Club secured a narrow 1–0 victory over Ibri, with Saud Khamis scoring the decisive goal after a balanced contest between the two sides, the win sends Sur through to the Round of 16 of His Majesty’s Cup, where they will face Bahla Club in a much anticipated encounter as Sur aims to continue its strong run in the prestigious tournament.
