MUSCAT: Represented by the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI), the Sultanate of Oman on Monday joined the international community in celebrating the World Statistics Day, which falls on October 20 every year.

This year, the celebration takes the theme 'High-quality statistics and data for the benefit of all.' The theme reflects the importance attached to the quality of data and its crucial role in supporting sustainable development and guiding decision-making.

Dr Khalifa bin Abdullah al Barwani, CEO of the NCSI, said, “Statistical work in Oman has transcended the traditional concept of collecting numbers. It has developed into a strategic vision that is realised by qualified national cadres.”

Al Barwani pointed out that statistical action in Oman has evolved from a mere technical process into a fundamental pillar in shaping the future of data and information - thus enhancing Oman's position in international forums.

Following this development, Oman has been able to conduct an annual electronic census of population, housing and establishments at zero financial cost, said Al Barwani.

He pointed out that this achievement paved the way for the implementation of the 'Family Expenditure and Income Survey' using artificial intelligence (AI). "It is the first survey of its kind in the world and its results will be announced in 2026," he explained.

Meanwhile, the GCC Statistical Centre (GCC-Stat) also participated in the celebration of the World Statistics Day.

Intisar al Wahaibi, Director-General of the GCC-Stat, said that the World Statistics Day embodies global appreciation for the vital role of statistics in ameliorating decision-making, achieving sustainable development and building a better future for humanity.

She pointed out that this year’s celebration assumes special significance due to the fact that it coincides with the 80th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations.

The World Statistics Day provides an opportunity to reaffirm Oman’s commitment to improve data quality, consolidate partnerships among various sectors and assert the vital role of statistics in devising national policies and keeping pace with global developments in line with the goals of Oman Vision 2040. - ONA
