A total of 62 feature, short and animated films from around the world will be showcased at the 3rd Al Batinah International Film Festival, set to take place from October 27 to 30 under the theme 'Cinema and the Sea', according to the Oman Film Society, the festival’s main organiser.
Speaking at a media briefing, Mohammed bin Abdullah al Ajmi, Chairman of the Oman Film Society and Festival Chair, said the event builds on the Society’s initiatives started with Expo 2020 Dubai.
“Region-wise film festivals aim to stimulate cinematic activity across Oman, promote film culture among youth and support creative talent,” he added.
Organised in cooperation with the Office of the Governor of Al Batinah North, the festival also aims to showcase creative talents, promote tourism and highlight Oman’s cultural heritage. Special categories include short documentaries, AI-generated films and films from Omani institutions. Awards will be given for Best Omani Feature Film, Best International Feature Film, Best Omani Documentary, Best International Documentary, Best AI Film and Best Omani Institutional Film.
The festival received 319 submissions from 33 countries, including 198 feature films, 88 documentaries, 18 AI films and 15 films from Omani institutions. Of these, 62 films were selected to compete across the various award categories.
A distinguished jury of Omani and international film-makers will preside over the awards, including experts from Egypt, Germany, Syria, Russia and Oman, covering categories such as short narratives, documentaries and AI films.
Ali bin Abdul Mohsen al Ajmi, General Manager of Votge Creative Labs and festival partner, highlighted that venues in Suhar, Shinas, Saham and Liwa have been prepared to host screenings and events at world-class standards, ensuring a unique experience for guests and participants.
The festival will open at Liwa Fort under the theme 'Al Batinah: Destination for Film Production'.
Key partners include the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth, the Ministry of Information, the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism, and the Al Batinah North Governorate Office. The festival also contributes to Oman Vision 2040, aiming to preserve Omani identity, develop national competencies and promote balanced development across the governorates.
