MUSCAT: The Oman Human Rights Commission (OHRC) has welcomed the issuance of Royal Decree No 89/2025, approving the Sultanate of Oman’s accession to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR).

The Commission stated that this milestone reflects the vision and commitment of His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik — may God protect him — to uphold justice, equality, and human dignity, reaffirming Oman’s active role within the global human rights framework.

Accession to the Covenant strengthens Oman’s legal and institutional safeguards, ensuring that civil and political rights are protected in accordance with international standards.

It also enhances confidence in the national human rights system and its alignment with the principles and obligations outlined in the ICCPR.

This step underscores Oman’s ongoing dedication to advancing human rights, engaging constructively with UN mechanisms, and developing national legislation and practices that reflect the highest international standards.
