

Muscat: The Women’s Basketball Championship begins on Friday and continues until Saturday, as part of the third Omani Women’s Olympic Games, organised by the Women’s Sports Department at the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth (MoCSY) in cooperation with the Oman Basketball Association (OBA). The tournament features wide participation from women’s teams and clubs eager to showcase their skills and abilities in one of the most prominent competitions of the Games.
A total of eight teams are taking part, divided into two groups: Group A includes Salalah, Al Amerat, Ibri and Qurayat, while Group B features Al Kamil W'al Wafi, Samayil, Sohar and Masirah. The matches are being held at the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex in Bausher.
The preliminary round follows a single round-robin format within each group, with teams ranked from first to fourth based on their results and total points. In the second stage, the first-place team from Group A meets the fourth from Group B, and the runner-up of Group A plays the third from Group B. Similarly, the third-placed team from Group A faces the runner-up from Group B, while the fourth from Group A meets the top team from Group B.
The top four teams then advance to the semifinals to compete for a spot in the final match, while the losing teams play for third place. The championship features 20 matches over two days, reflecting both the intensive organisation and the strong enthusiasm for participation in this event, one of the highlights of the Omani Women’s Olympic Games aimed at strengthening women’s presence in sports and promoting a spirit of competition and teamwork among players and participating clubs.
